- In Spin magazine's list of the top 100 Alternative Albums in 1995, 'Tonight's the Night' (1975) came in at #14, and 'Rust Never Sleeps' (1979) came in at #61.
- After Ronnie Van Zandt and Steve Gaines of Lynyrd Skynyrd were killed in a plane crash, Neil Young performed their song "Sweet Home Alabama" as a tribute to them. Van Zandt wrote the song as a rebuttal to the negative images portrayed in Young's songs "Southern Man" and "Alabama".
- Young's hobbies include collecting model trains (he has an extensive "train barn" on his Northern California ranch), collecting and restoring classic automobiles, and attending San Jose Sharks hockey games with his son, Ben Young.
