He originally auditioned for the role of Rocky in The Rocky Horror Show by singing the Little Richard song "Tootie Fruitie." Director Jim Sharman liked his performance so much, he cast him as Dr. Frank 'N Furter. Has earned two Tony Award Nominations, the first in 1981 for Best Actor in a Play for "Amadeus" and the second in 1993 for Best Actor in a Musical for "My Favorite Year." Turned down the role of Mitzi in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)
